For sammenligning med prisutvikling på varer og tjenester generelt se SSBs konsumprisindeks. Boligprisindeksen er utviklet av Boligmappa AS og bygger på Case–Shiller Repeated Sales Index (RSI). Metoden måler prisutvikling basert på gjentatte salg av samme bolig, kun boliger solgt minst to ganger inngår i beregningen. RSI estimerer den underliggende prisveksten i boligmassen, justert for endringer i boligenes egenskaper. Dette skiller den fra enkle mål som gjennomsnittlig kvadratmeterpris, som kan påvirkes av at de omsatte boligene et gitt år ikke nødvendigvis er representative for hele boligmengden.
